Current Meeting

NORTH CENTRAL TEXAS

CIVIL WAR ROUNDTABLE

May 5, 1015

The May 12th meeting of the Granbury CWRT will be held Tuesday at our usual spot, Spring Creek BBQ, 317 E Hwy 377 E in Granbury. Meal and fellowship beginning 5:30 pm with the program commencing at 6:30.

We have a terrific program with Don Barnhart, a Texas Civil War scholar who will give a presentation of the final battle of the war: The Battle of Palmito Ranch, May 11 – 13, 1865. This is no small coincidence that our meeting date celebrates the 150th anniversary! Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia on April 9th slightly over one month before. Some how the Texas troops never got the message! Don has made a speciality of Texas  and Texans involvement in the War. He has written numerous articles for Civil War Times as well as America’s Civil War. He is active in Civil War organizations and serves as a docent with the Texas Civil War Museum. He lives in The Colony, North of Dallas and is employed as an accountant with Southwest Airlines at Love Field. You will not want to miss this meeting; one of the very few battles fought on Texas soil.

In order to have the promised 5 meetings this spring we will have the final spring meeting Tuesday, June 9th at Spring Creek. Speaker will be Phillip Sozanski from Leander who will present a program on the effect of the Texas frontier experience on Confederate troops with a special emphasis on Hood’s Texas Brigade , the vanguard of Lee’s assault troops. You will hear more of Phillip later but, in the meantime be sure to mark your calendars for June 9th.

We have been invited to the Texas Civil War Museum Theater at 6:30 pm, Thursday, May 21st to hear Dr Greg Biggs. Military Historian and Author lecturing on The Confederate Flags of 1861. The museum will be open free of charge at 5:00 pm so those of you who have not been to the museum this will be an opportunity to see this acclaimed site.

I’ll look forward to seeing y’all on Tuesday, May 12.
